The basics

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a structured review of everything that affects how a website performs in search: technical health, content, on-page signals, links and competitors. A good audit does more than list problems. It ranks them by impact and effort, so you know exactly what to fix first and why.

Most audits fail in one of two ways. They are either a tool report with hundreds of warnings and no priorities, or a vague document that says "improve your content" without saying how. Mine sits in between: every finding is checked by hand, explained in plain English and tied to a specific fix.

I look at your site the way Google does, starting with the data Google gives site owners in Search Console, then crawling the site, reading the pages and comparing them with the competitors you're up against. Google's own SEO Starter Guide is a good primer on the basics an audit covers.

An audit is a starting point, not a result in itself. It's most valuable when the fixes actually get made, so every recommendation says who should do it, roughly how much effort it takes and what it should change.

What my SEO audit covers

01

Technical health check

Crawling, indexing, robots.txt, sitemaps, canonical tags, redirects, status codes and Core Web Vitals, based on my technical SEO checklist.

02

Indexing review

Which pages Google has indexed, which it has left out and why, using the Page indexing report in Search Console rather than guesswork.

03

On-page review

Titles, headings, meta descriptions, internal links and duplicate pages, checked against my on-page SEO checklist.

04

Content review

Thin, outdated or overlapping pages that compete with each other, plus the topics your competitors cover and you don't.

05

Backlink review

The quality of the sites linking to you, links you've lost, and anything risky that needs attention, compared with your main competitors.

06

Competitor comparison

Who ranks for the searches that matter to you, what their pages do better and where the realistic openings are.

07

Structured data and local checks

Schema markup validated, and for local businesses, your Google Business Profile and listings reviewed too.

08

Prioritised action plan

Every issue ranked by impact and effort, with a clear owner and a short explanation your team can act on straight away.

Manual vs automated

A manual SEO audit vs a tool report

Free and paid tools can crawl your site in minutes. They're useful, and I use them too. The difference is what happens after the crawl.

Questions about SEO audits

Can't see your question? Send me a message and I'll answer it.

What does an SEO audit include?

A review of technical health, indexing, on-page signals, content, backlinks and competitors, finished with a prioritised action plan. For local businesses, it also covers your Google Business Profile and listings.

How long does an SEO audit take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the site. A small brochure site is much quicker than a large shop with thousands of pages. I'll give you a delivery date when we agree the scope.

How much does an SEO audit cost?

It depends on the size of the site and how deep the audit needs to go. I'll quote a price before I start, so there are no surprises.

Will an SEO audit improve my rankings?

Not on its own. The audit shows what is holding you back; rankings improve when the fixes are made. That's why the action plan is written so your team, or I, can work through it quickly.

How often should I have an SEO audit?

Many sites benefit from a full audit around once a year, and always before or after a big change such as a redesign or migration. Lighter checks in Search Console every month catch most new problems early.

Can I do an SEO audit myself?

You can check the basics yourself with Search Console and a good checklist. Where an experienced eye helps is in separating real problems from noise and deciding what to fix first.

What is the difference between an SEO audit and a technical SEO audit?

A technical audit focuses on crawling, indexing, speed and site structure. A full SEO audit includes that, plus content, on-page signals, links and competitors.

What problems does an SEO audit usually find?

Common findings include pages blocked from indexing, duplicate or competing pages, broken redirects, slow templates, weak internal links, thin or outdated content and missing structured data. Most sites have a handful of issues that matter far more than the rest, and finding those is the point.

Is a free SEO audit worth it?

A free automated report can be a useful snapshot, but it can't tell you which issues matter for your business. A proper audit takes time because someone has to check, prioritise and explain each finding.

Can an audit find out why my traffic dropped?

Usually, yes. I compare the timing of the drop with site changes, Google updates, indexing data and competitor movements in Search Console and analytics, which normally narrows it down to a few likely causes.

Do you fix the issues as well?

If you want me to. I can make the changes myself, brief your developer, or hand the plan to your team and answer questions as they work through it.

Can you audit my site before a redesign?

Yes, and it's one of the best times to do it. The audit records what currently ranks and which URLs matter, which makes a safe website migration much easier.

Which platforms can you audit?

WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace and custom-built sites. The checks are the same; only the way fixes are made differs.

Do you use SEO tools?

Yes. Search Console, analytics, a crawler and backlink data are all part of it. Tools gather the data; judgement decides what matters for your business.

What will I receive at the end?

A written audit and a prioritised task list you can share with your team, plus a walk-through so nothing is left unclear.
